In the spring of 2008, Craig and Layla Baird began a journey they call “Our Green Year”. Each day, they are taking steps, some small, and some quite significant to live greener and more sustainable lives. And every step they take, they are sharing with a growing number of readers at their blog at http://www.ourgreenyear.blogspot.com Amazingly, the steps they have taken have allowed them to reduce their carbon footprint by roughly 90 percent. Some of the measures they have adopted include eating local and organic foods, driving much less, and various measures to make the ranch they are living on more sustainable. Their goal is to take the ranch “off the grid”. The ranch in Stony Plain, Alberta, is about an hour west of the capital city of Edmonton, and the couple shares a house there with Craig’s parents and his grandmother. The young couple, both professional writers, moved to the ranch after beginning their Green Year while living in Rossland, British Columbia. The green benefits of moving in with family are clear, and fortunately everyone gets along well. What are they trying to accomplish? “We want to show people that going green is easy, and if we can do 365 things, others can do 10 or so,” said Craig. Their efforts and their blogging about it have drawn the attention of readers from around the world including Europe and Nepal, and they’ve inspired many others to make similar lifestyle adjustments. Craig and Layla hope to ultimately achieve “zero impact” on the environment. Craig was recently a guest on a podcast interview at http:www.GreenBlogosphere.com.
